Some people see me as a narcissistic, arrogant ass who needs to be right, and brushes off other people's ideas as worthless. Others remember the goofy kid who always lost his jacket and couldn’t remember his boots for summer camp. I was dumbfounded by TYPE when I first tested for it because I thought my introversion was just me. My wife lately has taken to calling me disabled. Hmmm? Much of this blog, and too much of my own thinking is taken up trying to figure out who I am.
I developed this short presentation to help my HS students connect with me.
The first video shows some Naval Academy midshipmen who used GoPro cameras to record highlights of their 8 week 2/c summer training (just before Junior year - designed to help mids select where to serve). My training was similar, but included submarine acclimation that mids aren't allowed to record. As a teacher, I kicked the first day of school off with an ice breaker. Everyone had to say their name and “one thing” about themselves. I’d start and my one thing was that I spent 3 days on a submarine. No one is allowed to videotape onboard subs, so its not on the highlight vid, but my 2/c summer training is when I spent those 3 days aboard a sub.
At General Atomics, I created a program to support UAV operations. The second video is of the highlight from the capstone test flight before I left.
I had a great job at GA, but my education had been about satellites and rockets. SpaceDev offered me a chance to engage in these fields without leaving San Diego. The third video is a company year end highlight video shown at the 2013 Christmas party, just before I left.

The ironic part of the presentation is that despite the title, it’s really answering What is Mr. Beals? Who is a trickier question. I used to volunteer for a Navy program called CREDO. It was run by chaplains and involved a weekend retreat with various troubled sailors and dependents. The first rule of the retreat was that we had to shed what we are (jobs, ranks, titles) and just bring our who. It was well before cell phones, and watches were left behind. A lot of what I’m interested in has to do with making connections between my nodes of interest. Part of why I am starting to blog is to help me find my who. |
